About The Homestead

The original house was built in the early 1900s by a railroad baron. After the Sutton family purchased the house in the 1930s, they remodeled the property into an Inn for permanent residents. It was referred to as Sutton Place.

The property was then later purchased by Jim and Jane Buffington in 1945, and remained in the family for over 50 years. They renamed the property The Homestead, and it became a small Inn for overnight or weekend guests.

Jane Buffington was an artist and very active in the art community. Jim Buffington was a City Councilman and board member of the Carmel Youth Center.

The Inn continued to be run by the Buffington children and grandchildren until 2000. Before retiring, it became important to the last remaining family resident of the property that it be sold to someone who would continue to use the premises as an Inn.

Consisting of twelve rooms, The Homestead still represents much of that unique and quaint charm of one of those old Carmel inns.
